Project summary:
The project proposes the use of laser based techniques for obtaining
piezoelectric strain gauge and capacitor structures based on a new lead-free
material. Thin film of solid solution of barium zirconate titanate
(BaZrxTi1-xO3- BZT) with barium calcium titanate (Ba1-yCa1-yTiO3- BCT) system,
or BZT-xBCT were x is molar percent of BCT, will be deposited on different
substrates by Radiofrequency Assisted Pulsed Laser Deposition. The layers will
be characterized by Atomic Force Microscopy, Secondary Ions Mass Spectroscopy,
Spectroellipsometry, Scanning Electron Microscopy, Piezoresponse force
microscopy, X-ray diffraction, ferroelectric hysteresis measurements, High
Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy. Using MAPLE (Matrix assisted pulsed
laser evaporations), powders of BZT-xBCT material on different flexible support
for strain gauge applications. A second approach is proposed for obtaining
lead-free BZT-xBCT based pixels with dimensions in the range of tens to hundreds
on microns, for capacitor structures: printing by Laser Induced Forward Transfer
(LIFT). The advantages are many; the active layer can be transferred on
different receiving platforms.
Project objectives:
The main purpose of the project proposal is to study for the first time the dielectric, piezoelectric and ferroelectric properties of laser-processed thin film of BZT-xBCT system as a function of x, for piezoelectric strain gauge and capacitor applications.
Concrete objectives:
PLD and RF-PLD thin films deposition of lead-free BZT-xBCT material.
Strain gauge structures building
Building compact devices using
techniques such as Laser Induce Forward Transfer (LIFT)
